Major breakthrough in Australia’s fight against Covid-19 as TWO pills to treat the virus are granted provisional approval – here’s everything you need to know

    • TGA has approved two oral treatments for adults who contract Covid infections
    • Paxlovid and Lagevrio approved for adults at risk of hospitalisation or death 
    • Both medicines are taken twice a day for five days after initial infection
    • The treatments had already been approved in the UK and will land in Aus soon

    Two pills to help treat Covid infections have been approved by the Therapeutic Goods Administration for the first time in Australia.

    The oral treatments, Paxlovid and Lagevrio, have been provisionally approved for adults who catch the virus and who are at risk of hospitalisation or death. 

    ‘Neither product is intended to be used as a substitute for vaccination against Covid-19,’ the TGA said, adding the medication was not for patients who required oxygen.

    ‘Either medicine should be administered as soon as possible after diagnosis of Covid-19 and within 5 days of the start of symptoms.
