autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Notably, UK authorities have selectively enforced mass demonstrations like these in recent months, shutting down anything that goes against the lockdowns, while allowing and even praising dozens of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2020\/aug\/30\/hundreds-join-march-to-protest-against-systemic-racism-in-the-uk\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Black Lives Matter<\/a> and other far-left marches that freely took over the city over the summer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, London Mayor Sadiq Khan <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/uk-54309603\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">condemned <\/a>the anti-lockdown protest on Saturday, calling the protesters \u201creckless\u201d and \u201cviolent,\u201d when it was the police who first instigated violence when shutting the event down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe reckless and violent behavior of some protesters has left hard-working police officers injured and put the safety of our city, which is at a critical moment in the fight against this virus, at risk. This is totally unacceptable,\u201d Khan said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe cannot let the sacrifices Londoners have made be undermined by the selfish behavior of a small number,\u201d he added, seemingly unaware that thousands of people attended the protest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But in June, at the height of the pandemic, Khan <a href=\"https:\/\/www.london.gov.uk\/press-releases\/mayoral\/mayor-of-london-statement-on-blm\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">praised the BLM demonstrators marching through London<\/a>, assuring them he \u201cstands\u201d with their cause with no mention of violating the city\u2019s lockdown measures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTo the thousands of Londoners who protested peacefully today: I stand with you and I share your anger and your pain,\u201d Khan said. \u201cGeorge Floyd\u2019s brutal killing must be a catalyst for change worldwide. No country, city, police service or institution can absolve itself of the responsibility to do better. We must stand together and root out racism wherever it is found.
