The state recorded 279 new COVID-19 cases and 16 deaths<\/a> on Sunday. It is a drop from the 310 new cases announced on Saturday and lower than the record daily rise of 725 from last week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But speaking on Sunday, Mr Andrews said it was \u201cunlikely\u201d the virus would ever be completely eliminated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cEven when this second wave is over, we will still see cases, we will still see outbreaks, that is a function of this thing,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThe notion of completely extinguishing it and never seeing it again, I think that it would be an unlikely outcome.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Mr Andrews also revealed he had \u201ccautious optimism\u201d stage-four lockdown measures in Melbourne would be eased from mid-September.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Read more<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews has conceded the state may never completely eliminate COVID-19 cases.
