Melbourne Lockdown Extended until September 28

    Sky News Australia – Sep 6, 2020

The Melbourne metropolitan area will stay under its strict stage four restrictions for at least another two weeks until September 28 but will see the evening curfew eased by one hour.

Premier Daniel Andrews made the announcement on Sunday, where he outlined the state’s roadmap out.

“This is not a 50-50 choice. The modelling … indicates that if we open up too fast then we have a very high likelihood that we are not opening up at all,” Mr Andrews said.

“And we will be back in and out of lockdown, in and out of restrictions, before the end of the year. Indeed potentially well before the end of the year.”

“From 11:59pm on the 13 September, we will have to extend out for two weeks the current stage four restrictions that Victorians are living under, this is for Metro Melbourne,” he said.

The curfew will be slightly eased to 9:00pm and people will be allowed to exercise for two hours per day.

Those that are living alone can nominate a partner and can travel to one another’s residences.

From September 28 there will be second easing of restrictions, if cases remain between 30 and 50, restrictions on schools and public gatherings can be further eased.

“The second step, from the 28 September, subject to public health advice and subject to the average daily cases in between 30 and 50 at that point, public gatherings will be increased to five people from two households, schools, they will be a staged return of school for prep, grade one, grade two.

“Childcare reopens. More workplaces open,” he said.

“Around 100,000 workers who are currently unable to attend work will be able to attend work in a number of different industries and you have a breakdown of those different industries.”

“The way in which we have arrived at those industries being able to resume is a very difficult set of judgements that weigh up the public health risk and the economic benefit.”

The premier said the last step from November 23, will see public gatherings increased to 50 people, and home gatherings of 20.
